BJP's Kalyan Choubey withdraws, clears way for Maniktala assembly bypoll
Kailash Vijayvargiya, the National General Secretary of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has sparked outrage by making derogatory remarks about the dress of women during a program organized for Hanuman Jayanti in Indore.
In response, the Trinamool Congress has condemned Vijayvargiya's comments, with party members Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sarkar and Minister Dr. Shashi Panja accusing the BJP leader of comparing women to a demon.
Vijayvargiya reportedly said, "We consider women as goddesses, but some women wear dirty clothes… but they have no problem with them. She is like Shurpanakha." Shurpanakha is a character from the Hindu epic Ramayana who was disfigured by the hero Laxman.
Vijayvargiya, who was previously active in West Bengal politics as the BJP's observer during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has been criticized for his controversial statements. The Trinamool Congress has accused BJP leaders of being anti-women, noting that they often talk about 'nari shakti' (women empowerment) while simultaneously making derogatory comments about women who do not dress according to their definition of "good".
Trinamool Congress MP Jawahar Sarkar took to Twitter to condemn Vijayvargiya's comments, stating that such remarks are indicative of a group's low mentality. He also called on people to reflect on whether they are safe in such an environment.
This is not the first time that Vijayvargiya has found himself in the midst of controversy due to his remarks. Last year, he attacked Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by stating, "The way women change their lovers, in the same way Nitish also changes partners."
